Questions people ask

Invoice finance, explained

What is invoice finance?

Invoice finance lets a business release cash tied up in unpaid invoices instead of waiting for customers to pay. A funder advances most of the invoice value up front and releases the balance, less their fees, once the customer settles.

What is the difference between invoice factoring and invoice discounting?

With factoring, the funder also manages your sales ledger and collects payment from your customers, so they know a funder is involved. With discounting you keep control of credit control and collections, and the arrangement is usually confidential. Discounting normally suits larger, more established businesses.

How much does invoice finance cost?

Costs vary a lot by industry, turnover, customer quality and the type of facility, so headline rates rarely reflect what you would actually pay. Pricing usually combines a service fee and a discount charge on the funds drawn. Running a comparison is the only reliable way to get accurate figures for your business.

How can I compare quotes on a like-for-like basis?

Quotes are hard to compare because providers structure fees differently. We can provide a comparative APR that brings the rates and the fees together into a single figure, so you can line quotes up against each other fairly.

Which businesses can use invoice finance?

It is designed for UK businesses that invoice other businesses on credit terms. It is widely used in sectors with long payment terms such as construction, recruitment, haulage, manufacturing and business services. Funders look at your customers' ability to pay as well as your own trading history.

Does checking affect my credit score?

No. Comparing rates here is a free check and does not leave a mark on your credit file. A credit search only happens later if you choose to proceed with a provider and make a formal application.

How quickly can I get funds?

Timescales depend on the provider and how quickly the facility is set up, and can range from a couple of days to a few weeks. Once a facility is running, individual invoices are typically funded within about a day of being submitted.

How does comparing work on this site?

There are two ways. You can answer a few questions and see indicative rates on screen straight away, or upload a single unpaid invoice, which is analysed automatically with the customer verified against Companies House data, for an instant eligibility decision.
